
At age 27, he was enrolled in the National Theatre School of Denmark where he graduated in 1995. He was also a part of The Killing, a drama show that was telecast across the globe. He was later featured in Borgen III and Those Who Kill Two internationally highly acclaimed Danish drama series. He also played a lead role in an episode of the BBC drama Sherlock as a blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen. In the American television show House of Cards, he played the role of the president of Russia. In 2018, he won an International Emmy Award for his character as the president of Russia in the Danish television drama Herrens Veje. It was shown in the UK in the year 2019. According to Mikkelsen's account the actor was taught English from his older brother by watching Monty Python recordings and watching the comedy sketches.
